Lock rekeying in Langley.
What the work involves
Know what you are looking at.
Rekeying changes the pin stacks inside an existing cylinder so a new key operates it and every previous key stops working. The lock stays on the door, which is why it is usually quicker and cheaper than replacement. It requires the cylinder to be in sound condition and of a type that can be re-pinned, and compatible cylinders across a property can be keyed alike so one key runs several doors.
- Whether the existing cylinders are sound enough to re-pin
- Whether the cylinders across the property are compatible with each other
- Whether you want one key for all doors or deliberately separate keys
- Who currently holds keys, and whether any are unaccounted for
- Who may authorise the change here — owner, landlord, or strata
- Which Langley municipality the address actually falls under

In Langley
What is different here.
Townhouse and condo entries are usually strata common property, so the strata - not the individual owner - controls the building door; a suite door inside the unit is the owner’s to change. Rekeying is where this bites hardest in Langley: the person who wants the old keys stopped and the person entitled to authorise that are not always the same, and it is worth settling before the work is booked.
Langley is two municipalities - the City of Langley and the much larger Township of Langley - so an address in Willoughby and one in Langley City sit under different local governments even though people call both “Langley”. If a property manager handles several buildings across those boundaries, confirming which address is being rekeyed avoids the wrong unit being scheduled.
Before you call
Lock rekeying questions.
The two that come up most for this service in Langley.
I just moved into a Langley home - should I rekey or replace?
If the hardware is sound, rekeying is usually the better value: the previous keys stop working without buying new locks. Replacement makes sense when the hardware is worn, damaged, or does not suit the door.
Can a landlord or tenant rekey on their own?
Not freely. Under BC's Residential Tenancy Act a landlord cannot change the locks on an occupied rental without the tenant's agreement or an order, and a tenant cannot generally alter locks without permission. Sorting out who is authorising the change comes first.
